Fort Wainwright Physical Fitness Center
This 73,000 square foot military recreation facility includes a gymnasium, a multipurpose area, a weight room, an indoor running track, racquetball courts, exercise room, and locker rooms. The outdoor recreation facilities include a four-field softball complex, a soccer field, a second soccer field with bleachers. The facility addresses both the physical demands of northern climates and the special psychological needs of those who live and work in Alaska’s interior. The facility also blends comfortably with its austere surroundings, yet encourages fitness and reinforces the morale of those stationed on a military post in northern Alaska. Livingston Slone was a Joint-Venture partner with BOORA of Portland, Oregon.
The project won an Honor Award from the Alaska Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
