Alaska Public Health Laboratory

This building serves two distinct but inter-related state agencies: Public Health Laboratory and Medical Examiner. The challenge was to design a facility that incorporated the needs of the two agencies including security and safety (for the public and for the scientists) with shared, publicly accessible areas, while also respecting site constraints. The Laboratory portion includes office spaces, Bio Safety Level 2 and 3 laboratories as well as a training laboratory. The Medical Examiner's Facility includes autopsy suites, coolers, embalming rooms, offices and a private, secure delivery sally port.
The building was designed with the future in mind. All of the building's engineered systems were developed to support expansion and technological upgrades. The ventilation system is a study in efficiency; addressing the discreet needs of the labs, autopsy and office areas.
