E.A. & Jenny Rasmuson Community Health Center · Skagway, Alaska

This health center is a collaboration of the Dahl Memorial Clinic and the City of Skagway. The single story, 14,000 SF health center has been efficiently designed to provide direct access for public services while still accommodating the privacy of clinical services – an essential need in small, rural communities. The health center provides multiple services including radiology, dental, behavioral health, a laboratory, and urgent care. Lighting is supplemented via the use of natural daylighting techniques; the offices, work areas, and exam rooms are located on the perimeter of the building. For spaces that require privacy, borrowed lighting techniques supplement natural light.

The exterior of the building is designed to have a “craftsman style” wood frame appearance which reflects the surrounding community’s vernacular. The cedar wood siding is complimented with river rock masonry. This not only relates to the wooded area surrounding the site but also the natural creek which runs through the site.

A special design feature is the donor wall located at the facility’s entrance. The donor wall was designed by LSI to showcase the contributors by four species of salmon.
