Veterans Administration Clinic Anchorage Regional Office

Livingston Slone is the prime architect for this $66 million, 180,000 SF Medical Clinic and Regional Offices building currently under construction. SmithGroup provided medical planning and interior design. In addition to general primary care the new clinic includes a day surgery suite and specialty facilities such as audiology, imaging, dental, and physical therapy. Other spaces include a canteen, central lobby and conference/education center.

A connecting “link” to the existing Elmendorf AFB Hospital allows sharing of staff and services. The two story, light-filled lobby exhibits artwork and rich stone and wood textures under a tree-form roof structure. From the lobby visitors travel three main corridors to reach various services; each corridor is single-loaded, light-filled exterior window-wall visible from the parking lot, thus simplifying visitor orientation and wayfinding. Directly off the lobby are located common services: pharmacy, lab, dentistry and billing. From the main corridors, the design ensures that patients are afforded privacy by clearly defining public (waiting) and private areas (exam rooms and offices). Both visual and sound privacy are well managed to maintain patient confidentiality. Private areas are designed to accommodate family members who may be assisting an elderly or injured Veteran.

The architecture features simple exterior forms and a covered entry with heated walkways. The durable exterior material pallette is curtainwall, zinc-clad panels and resin-impregnated wood panels.

A primary design theme is to make the facility comfortable for the Veterans and those who serve them. This is achieved by providing ready wayfinding, wide corridors, ample daylight, calming views of nature, comfortable waiting areas, easily accessible services and needed privacy.
