Community Health Services Building for the Yukon Kuskokwim Health Corporation

YKHC Front - Click Here for larger image. The owner, a Yup’ik Eskimo non-profit health corporation serving 47 villages, required a building to consolidate several existing facilities; to provide economy of ownership; and to provide a strong sense of cultural identity that imparts a feeling of well-being and respect to the local native clientele. Cold climate needs were met through the use of thermal pilings, insulated paneling and other energy efficient features that will also allow easy expansion. The cultural identity was established with innovative use of materials and colors. Traditional hues of beach grasses, indigenous clays, rich driftwoods (resembling oiled walnut), wild berries, and charcoal are immediately apparent and familiar. This project received an award for Excellence in Architecture from the Alaska Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
