Alaska has the most productive and important fisheries in the United States. Nearly five billion pounds of fish are commercially harvested from its waters each year. Southeast Alaska plays an enormous role in using the resource for industry and sport. Providing for the long-term health of the fishery from the standpoints of commercial, recreational, subsistence, and environmental interests requires a similar long-term management and research investment. With proper management, healthy fish stocks can be maintained, diminished populations can be restored, and the economic viability of a resource can continue to flourish. The NOAA National Marine Fisheries Laboratory will provide a state-of-the-art research facility with sufficient space, in sufficient quantity or of sufficient quality to address the growing concerns for the region’s marine resources. The Laboratory was planned and designed to be sustainable and to provide a flexible environment for changing research needs.
